Fast & Furious 6

Defying conventional wisdom, "Fast & Furious 6" shows the series isn't losing steam as it continues to feature spectacular action and a great cast. Plot holes and physics defying stunts are forgivable as it ends up being an action flick worth checking out in theaters.

Star Trek Into Darkness

It's hard not to wonder if the reason Abrams is so big on secrecy in the first place is because he knows his mystery box is empty. This is a "Star Trek" film designed for audiences distracted by shiny objects. Die hard fans -- and the moviegoing public in genearl -- deserve better than this shameful franchise entry.

Star Trek Into Darkness

There's no rule that a big summer movie should be any more than that, even if the filmmakers involved had managed that before. But it can't help but be a disappointment and that is what "Star Trek Into Darkness" is. Pretty and loud, but unimaginative and repetitive. Far from going where no one has gone before, this "Trek" is only interested in retreating along his old tracks.

The Great Gatsby

Luhrmann seems to be on the right path and with a little bit of discipline he probably could have made it. But there are just too many distractions for his attention and as a result, "Gatsby" waivers and wanders, overblown and overdone and about twenty minutes too long. Fine performances and stunning production design make it worth a look on video, but don't expect to take much from it.

Iron Man 3

"Iron Man 3" features fantastic dialogue and great supporting characters. The action and special effects aren't too shabby either. But the handling of the Mandarin will be a topic of debate among fans.

Iron Man 3

Those are generally small quibbles, though, as "Iron Man" continues to set the bar for Marvel's solo superhero films through a combination of wit, charm and out and out entertainment. It's not quite as good as "Iron Man 2"--but then I'm one of the few who thinks "Iron Man 2" is the best of the series--but it's not far off and certainly does no shame to the series. I don't know how many more of these they can make, but so far it doesn't look like they've run out of steam quite yet.

Pain & Gain

"Pain & Gain" is a film that even those who don’t like Michael Bay might love. Thanks to strong performances by Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, the true story is engaging. But the realization that this black comedy is based on real murders puts things in perspective.

Oblivion

While "Oblivion" is a blend of a lot of familiar sci-fi ideas, the end result is still enjoyable thanks to the performance of Tom Cruise, a script with some heart, and impressive production design.
